The finish is the final treatment given to the surface of a granite slab or tile. The same block of stone can look strikingly different depending on how it is finished — and the finish also affects grip, maintenance and where the stone can be used.
Polished
A polished finish is ground with progressively finer abrasives until the surface is smooth and reflective. It brings out the full depth of colour and pattern, which is why it is the most popular choice for kitchen countertops, vanities and interior feature walls.
- Looks: glossy, rich colour, maximum contrast in the grain.
- Best for: countertops, vanities, interior walls, reception desks.
- Keep in mind: can be slippery when wet, so it is less suited to wet floors or exteriors.
Honed
Honing stops the grinding process before a shine appears, leaving a smooth, matte surface. Colours look softer and lighter than when polished.
- Looks: matte, calm, contemporary.
- Best for: flooring, bathrooms, minimalist kitchens.
- Keep in mind: may show marks and fingerprints more readily on dark stone; sealing is often recommended.
Flamed (thermal)
A high-temperature flame is passed over the surface, causing some crystals to break away and leaving a rough, textured finish with good slip resistance.
- Looks: rugged, lighter in tone, natural.
- Best for: exterior paving, steps, pool surrounds, façades.
- Keep in mind: usually needs a minimum thickness to withstand the process.
Leathered
Brushing the surface with diamond-tipped brushes produces a soft sheen with a subtle texture you can feel. It keeps much of the colour depth of polished stone while hiding fingerprints and water spots.
- Looks: low sheen, tactile, rich.
- Best for: countertops, especially in dark granites; feature walls.
Other textured finishes
Depending on the stone and the project, other finishes such as brushed, sandblasted and bush-hammered may be discussed. These are typically used for exterior and architectural work where grip and a natural appearance are the priority.
How finish changes each colour
Black Granite is at its most dramatic when polished; honed or leathered black reads as a deep charcoal with a modern feel.
Red Granite shows its warmest, richest tone polished, while flamed red becomes lighter and more earthy — well suited to exterior work.
White Granite looks crisp and bright polished and becomes softer and more muted when honed.
Choosing the right finish
Match the finish to the use first — wet or exterior areas need grip; worktops need easy cleaning — and then to the look you want. Not every finish suits every granite variety or thickness, so confirm the options for your chosen stone before finalising the specification.
